![]() The iffy tour version – shorn of strings and charm – attests to his handiwork on the recording. Finally entrusted to build an arrangement from scratch, he turned the live favourite Burn the Witch into this orchestral jaunt. Once the band’s secret weapon, Greenwood is now a garlanded composer and Radiohead’s melodic powerhouse. Trying a new tack, the Amnesiac opener layers anxious ticks and gamelan-style chimes before gently lampooning a “reasonable man” with an uneasy conscience. Packt Like Sardines in a Crushd Tin Box (2001)Īfter decrying consumerism, swerving into outre avant-rock and selling millions of records anyway, Radiohead learned the hard way that condemning society would just make them even richer. Thom scoring Suspiria is a much cooler thing than Radiohead just tacking a song onto the front of a dumb action thriller like that.Yorke performing in Manchester in 2012. Bond isn't cool, its just more mainstream action fodder for the masses. I've seen more than enough Bond films over the years to have it become dull, background noise with some seriously dumb set pieces more often than not. Not saying Billie's song is better than Radiohead's, just saying it also a really good song itself (to my ears).Īlso, as an aside, i'm kinda glad Radiohead were denied being involved in such a cheesy and lame franchise as James Bond anyway. She deserves it, just as Radiohead would have deserved it if they were chosen. She's a big ( maybe the biggest ) name around because she ( and her brother, Finneas of course ) is an absolutely incredible song writer in her/their own right. I know art is subjective, but c'mon, Billie Eilish isn't just a big name because she happens to fit into the "flavour of the month" pigeon-hole. " It shows the Bond people don't care about the music itself, just how big the artists name currently is." Adele's track was the better pick but if Muse had competed a film before or after that, they would've been selected. Unfortunately it competed with Adele's Skyfall which is one of the, if not the, best bond songs of all time. What's more shocking is the rumored Muse track (Supremacy) not being selected. Sam Smith's song has decent string and piano but his singing is much more digestible to general audience and song has a very long hook, that's very catchy. I don't think it's a bad song but it's a very "Radiohead" - y sounding song for the better or the worse. Although the string intensity increases, Thom's sound negates all of it. The lack of hook also hurts that by the 2nd half the sounds the samey. But Thom's singing is kinda offputing and too sleepy for general audience and the song has a very weak hook. The opening section, String and piano is definitely God tier in Radiohead's version. But commercial appeal is something Radiohead's song lacked big time. ![]() Which song is "better" is very subjective. To be fair, Sam Smith's song is much better song for the purpose. But given how the film turned out it makes much more sense in hindsight that it also had an equally decent (but not great) theme song. That being said, Radiohead's "Spectre" would have been the better choice. And it simply does not always pay off to get in the coolest musicians, see Jack White's song for Quantum of Solace which I liked but which ultimately was far from the instant classic that was expected of him. ![]() Smith's song is a good song by Bond song standards. Secondly, Sam Smith's song was more accessible with it's arguably more straightforward rhythm, harmony and an actual chorus. So from that perspective, Sam Smith at what was arguably the height of his fame makes a little more sense especially when trying to reach a younger audience than an alternative rock band, no matter how iconic they are. Radiohead Not For Profit (live performances)īuy/Sell/Trade Ticket Thread (Tomorrow's Modern Boxes)įirst of all, obviously Bond songs are, have and will always be chosen according to how popular the artist is and how much exposure they can guarantee their film. ![]() Unofficial Radiohead Interview Public Library (Interview archive 2017-)ĪustinBrock's Youtube (live performances) The Radiohead Almanac (Radiohead live guide)ĬmonTakeTheStairs's Youtube (Interview archive 1993-2017) Radiohead Public Library (Official collection of live performances, TV appearances, music, etc.) WASTE Headquarters (Official Radiohead site) r/radioheadrankdown (also check out /r/theultimaterankdown happening now!)
